hora feliz

Today we spent happy hour at Cascabel a new restaurant in Santa Rosa. This place has so much Tequila it’s crazy! I am not a tequila drinker or I probability would not have been able to choose a cocktail. For me today was all about the Red Sangria. It’s made with red wine, Sandman Ruby Port, citrus fruits and simple syrup. The drink was well balanced, not too sweet. It had a nice spicy note from the port. A very yummy, refreshing drink.

For our Happy Hour treat we ordered Guacamole and Chicken Taquitos. The guacamole was not to spicy with good acid balance. I wish it was a bit creamer, but thats just me. The taquitos were made with shredded chicken and served with a lovely fire roasted tomato salsa and crema and fresh quaso crumbles. I liked these very much. The fire roasted salsa stole the show.

We also had chips and salsa. It came with 3 different sauces, all of them good.

Hitchcock house – Shadow of a doubt

Shadow of a doubt was filmed, in part, in Santa Rosa California in 1943. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. When watching the film you can see landmarks that are still standing today. It was a joy to rematch this movie, just to see my town, old school style. Today I took a photo of the home used in this film and a picture of the movie to see how little has changed. Enjoy!!!

This weeks photo challenge is very exciting to me. My town is soooo cool and I couldn’t wait to participate. This will be my first in many posts this week and likely weeks to come.

A non-burger

In our neighbor hood the hang out spot is Carmen’s Bruger Bar. The restaurant makes a great burger, salads, and mexican food.

We stop in frequently for a quick bite and a beer. Today I ordered the Spicy Chicken Burrito. The plating is so colorful. I love the tri-colored corn chips! The blue ones are the best! The burrito was a great size, I took half of it home. The chicken was shredded and the spiced just right to not over power any ingredients. I really love cheese and this burrito had a good amount. The order came with sour cream, pico-de-gallo, and guacamole. The guacamole was very tasty and the amount was generous. The spicy finish was well balanced, so yummy, it made my upper lip sweat a bit. Burrito yumminess!!

Jackson’s Bar and Oven

Today our adventure brought us to Jackson’s Bar and Oven. It’s a casual, upscale dining experience. Besides the usual restaurant ambiance it has a kick ass kitchen bar and wood fire oven for extra yumminess.

My cocktail of choice today was ‘Kicked in the Nutmeg’. It’s a glorious Eagle Rare Bourbon & Disaronno Amaretto drink with orange juice, cinnamon syrup, lemon juice, and Nutmeg. WOW! It is citrus and warm spice, clean and tangy sweet on the palate. This is a delicious drink, so much so I had 2.

For my starter I had an order of the Oysters. I was super impressed with both sauces. The Shallot Mignonette sauce had a hint of jalapeño, surprising me, but in a happy tasted bud way. The Cocktail sauce also had a nice surprise with a hint of horseradish. Sooooo yum. I order Oysters a lot and I must say these 2 sauce are fantastic.

For my main course I ordered the Reuben. I have had this sandwich before, it’s just so good, I had to have it again. The bread had a nice toast to it. The flavor was well balanced I could taste every ingredient. The amount of meat on this sandwich is crazy! Just sooo much meat, and oh so yummy. I was super happy to have this sandwich again. Next time I promise to order something different, not because this sandwich is ungood, quite the opposite. It’s just if I don’t make this promise now, I know I will reorder it. It is just that good.

Second Saturday

On the second Saturday of every month I have a breakfast date with my Mom. It is something we started years ago and will continue forever.

The most beautiful thing about this standing date is, that at least once a month, we see each other. Life is so busy, taking care of a home, winning the bread… that spending time with your family sometimes gets lost. Writing this on the calendar, at the start of the year, is so empowering. It’s making time with my best friend no mater what!

We always meet at Macs at 7:30am. All our friends and family know about the date and are encouraged to join us. Sometime they do…. the more the merrier! I love eating here. The food is alway great and the staff have been there for years and feel like friends.

This morning was a bit different in that I ordered a strawberry pancake with whip cream and strawberries on top. I know, strawberries in January, but I was craving something sweet. My breakfast was so yummy! The cake was fluffy and light. The chef made a custom order for me by cooking strawberries into the cake! So very unique and thoughtful.

I had a wonderful breakfast and a fantastic visit with my mom.

I’m grateful to have this monthly social with my Mom. The time spent is minimal but the value is priceless. Do you have any plans with your immediate family or friends that reoccur? Weekly? Monthly? Annually?
